Marketing SaaS alternatives

Pick the tool you're paying for. See the year-one true cost, the open-source or cheaper replacement, and how to switch — or why not to.

HubSpot alternatives

Year 1: $16,680

Pricing scales aggressively with contacts and seats. Onboarding fee is mandatory. Feature bundling forces users to pay for modules they don't use.

Mailchimp alternatives

Year 1: $1,620

Price jumps sharply once contact list grows past 500. Automation limited on lower tiers. Free plan capped at 500 contacts (down from 2000).

Calendly alternatives

Year 1: $360

Per-seat pricing multiplies across a team, and the free tier's 1-event-type limit pushes most real users to paid immediately.

Zapier alternatives

Year 1: $1,548

Billing counts action steps, not workflow runs, so cost scales with workflow complexity rather than business volume. Adding a filter or formatter step to an existing Zap raises the bill without doing more work.

Hootsuite alternatives

Year 1: $1,188

Pricing multiplies linearly per seat while the underlying job — queueing posts to public social APIs — has no proprietary data moat. Three seats cost roughly six times what the equivalent server does.

Notion alternatives

Year 1: $120

Per-seat pricing on a document store, where the underlying capability (structured docs in a database) has open-source equivalents.

Slack alternatives

Year 1: $87

Per-seat pricing where the binding constraint is message retention, which is a storage problem rather than a proprietary capability.

Loom alternatives

Year 1: $180

Screen recording and hosting is commodity capability; the per-seat charge scales with team size while storage cost does not.

Intercom alternatives

Year 1: $468

Seat pricing plus an uncapped AI meter; the inbox itself is replaceable but the AI resolution cost follows you.

LaunchDarkly alternatives

Year 1: $1,200

Client-side MAU pricing scales quickly. 10K MAU = $1,200/year. Enterprise features (SCIM, approvals, 100+ day retention) require custom pricing.

Klaviyo alternatives

Year 1: $1,200

Most expensive ESP per contact. Charges for inactive profiles. Send volume caps create surprise upgrade pressure. Core segmentation + automation available in cheaper alternatives.

Postmark alternatives

Year 1: $1,200

Postmark costs $1,200/year for 100K emails vs SES Essentials at $192/year. But self-hosting costs $7,200/year in server + DevOps time. This is the rare case where the cheapest option is still a SaaS.

Tracked, not yet written

These are in our pricing dataset but do not have a guide yet. We publish one when the vendor's billing structure and the alternative's maintenance record have both been verified — not before.

Ruled out on purpose

We priced these and decided not to write the guide. Plenty of sites publish “open-source alternatives” lists for them; we think those lists are wrong, and we would rather say so than add one.

  • Ahrefs · from $1,290/yr — Ahrefs sells a proprietary web crawl. Self-hosting cannot reproduce it, so a 'self-hosted alternative' guide would mislead the reader. Every candidate replacement covers only rank tracking (one of four products) and must itself rent SERP data from a paid third party, so the exit is a subscription plus a server, not a saving.
  • Semrush — Same structural problem as Ahrefs: the product is a proprietary index. Ruled out together with it.
  • SendGrid — SendGrid merged into Twilio; pricing no longer standalone. For Twilio Email API, use SES instead—simpler and cheaper.
